The Public Purse has claimed this week; that the public sector could save over £10 million pounds in this year’s budget within the next 12 months

Research into mobile vendor pricing has shown that 700 plus government contracts could be negotiated for more than £10 million pounds less if the public-sector collaborated in a collective procurement effort.

The Public Purse claims their research shows over 200 mobile phone contracts expiring in the next nine months with a total spend of over 26 million pounds.

In aid of providing a solution, the public purse has rolled out ‘Be Connected’ a first-time online application that will provide government bodies with insight into contractual information, allowing organisations to identify local and national collaboration opportunities.

Furthermore ‘Be Connected’ will provide a platform for organisations to share best practice, strategies and next year add the ability to discuss objectives and identify frameworks.

The UK’s proclaimed youngest think tank is aiming to achieve over £100 million pound saving in the public sector by 2020 with Be Connected.

Vimal, Project Director of the Public Purse, said:” This project is to encourage public bodies to work together in a collaborative effort to save time and save cost. Be Connected has been designed to give the power back to procurement professionals, offering them the first time insight into buyer behaviour of neighbouring organisations. Our goal may be ambitious, but with support from the local authorities and organisations, we will hit our target.

Volume is the key to unlocking lower pricing. Supermarkets have been using this principle for decades. Now it’s the turn of the public sector to adopt this approach seriously. The volume of procurement of government dwarfs every other buyer in the market, but the buying community is fragmented into regional bodies and authorities with no official communication path.

The Public Purse will publish updates to the project every six months on their website https://www.thepublicpurse.org.uk/project/cspg/, alongside their other projects which include a Manchester focused survival guide for the homeless and reward programme for carers who work over 40 hours a week.
