Dr. Umeshappa completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, India
He received a Master of Veterinary Science degree in Veterinary Pathology from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, India, where he studied the immunopathology of Bluetongue (BT), an arboviral disease of sheep, and contributed to the development of a cross-reactive BT vaccine.
He completed his PhD in Cancer and Cellular Immunology in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, investigating how CD4+T cells modulate CD8+ T cell responses and provide protection against cancer. In his recent studies as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Calgary, he focused his research on developing novel disease-relevant nanomedicines to suppress autoimmunity under the supervision of Dr. Pere Santamaria.
He joined Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie University in July 2021, recently opened his research laboratory, and has been named a Tier II Canada Research Chair.
