Nick is a senior investigator at the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB). HSSIB is the independent and no-blame investigator of patient safety issues and risks across the NHS in England. As an investigator, Nick leads on investigations across a range of healthcare settings using systems-thinking approaches to make national recommendations to support improvements in care. His specialist interests include the investigation of digital issues and their contribution to patient harm.
Nick started his professional life as a medical doctor before redirecting his career to study and work in patient safety. He is a human factors specialist with chartership through the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, and was awarded his PhD by the University of Nottingham for research into safety in healthcare and other safety-critical industries. He has published work and edited a book around near misses with focus on learning from different industries.
