Jin Young leads the Gastric Cancer Prevention Team at IARC/WHO, focusing on international research to understand and prevent gastric cancer, with particular emphasis on the screening and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection. She co-leads large-scale randomized clinical trials, including HELPER and GISTAR, which evaluate H. pylori eradication combined with endoscopic follow-up to reduce gastric cancer risk in the general population. Jin Young also leads etiological studies such as global risk factor surveys (ENIGMA) and prediagnostic biomarker discovery projects (META-GC, INTL-CC) aimed at improving risk stratification. Her team plays an active role in European initiatives like EUROHELICAN and TOGAS, which focus on implementing gastric cancer prevention strategies across Europe. More recently, she has taken a leading role in developing European guidelines and quality assurance schemes for gastric cancer prevention, screening and care, as part of the European Commission Initiative on Cancer. Jin Young holds an MSc from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and an MPhil and PhD in cancer epidemiology from the University of Cambridge.
