I received my MD from University College Dublin in Ireland in 1972, my FRCSI in 1976, my PhD in 1983 from Northwestern University, Chicago, and completed a four year residency in Neurology at Emory University, Atlanta GA in 1997. My special research Interest since 1980s was to develop a long-lasting electrode with stable signals that would provide a permanent brain connection for prosthetic applications. With FDA approval my team and I have implanted five locked-in participants for communication and off-line speech decoding. We are now in a position to implant a locked-in participant for restoration of conversational speech. The research effort has received several Small Business Innovation Research grants to fund the research. We now dependent on private funds.
