    Dr. DARRYL FALZARANO, Ph.D. is a Research Scientist/Principal Investigator at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan

    At VIDO, he currently oversees the operations of the Emerging Respiratory Viruses CL3 laboratories. Dr. Falzarano’s research interests have centered around establishing preclinical animal models of emerging viruses that are suitable for evaluating countermeasures – this has include nonhuman primate and alpaca models for MERS-CoV in addition to hamster, ferret and nonhuman primate models for SARS-CoV-2.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the development of two adjuvanted subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, one of which (COVAC-2) recently completed the vaccination phase of a phase II clinical trial. His lab has also developed two different MERS-CoV vaccines that are targeted for use in camels.
