    David Barnes, Deposit Return Programme Manager, Zero Waste Scotland

    David has lead Zero Waste Scotland in the design of the best possible deposit return scheme for Scotland, building on expert research and engaging with stakeholders to shape and inform the conversation. David now continues to provide support and advice to the Scottish Government on the implementation of the scheme.

    David has 14 years of experience in the resource management sector, joining Zero Waste Scotland from Midlothian Council in 2011 and holding senior roles in the organisation’s Resource Efficient Scotland and Litter and Flytipping teams before securing his current position. He led on Zero Waste Scotland’s work to prepare both consumers and retailers for the introduction of the single-use carrier bag charge in Scotland in October 2014, and was seconded to the Scottish Government to help develop the Scottish Government’s Circular Economy strategy – Making Things Last. David is also a certified Chartered Waste Manager.
