Dr Barango is the technical lead for the Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative in the Department of Non Communicable Diseases and Mental Health in WHO Headquarters. In addition, he provides strategic planning leadership and guidance on NCD management, as well as contributing to ensure that NCDs are anchored across all programmes.
Dr Barango is a public health expert with experience in management, prevention and control of Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) that spans over two decades within the developing country context.
Dr Barango has more than 15 years of extensive regional and international experience, and his work has focused on the design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and coordination of international public health programmes in areas such as Emergencies, HIV, and NCDs, across several countries in the African region and beyond.
He has led the development of policy papers, regional strategies, standard operating procedures and other guidance documents on NCDs including cervical cancer and has provided both technical and strategic support to countries in the African Region to operationalize decentralized and integrated approaches for prevention, treatment and care for NCDs.
