I graduated in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Turin (Italy) in 1987 and obtained PhD in Horticulture in 1992 on the genetic analysis of tree crops using molecular biology methods. Subsequently, I obtained the Polish National Scientific Qualification in Horticulture in 2012 on aspects of phosphorus nutrition and plant metabolism. I am interested and has researched in the field of soil management, particularly in plant-soil microbial relationships, organic biostimulants application and agroecological approaches related to plant nutrition in horticultural crops. In the last ten years, I have widen the research interests to plant relations with soil-borne pests and the use of biopesticides together with microbial-based products and plant-derived compounds for their control. I am currently Chair of the Working Group on Organic Temperate Fruits of the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS) and member of the expert group advising the EU Commission on organic farming (EGTOP) since 2015. Author and co-author of more than 100 publications, book chapters and editor of several technical monographies, I am also member of the editorial board of few scientific journals.
