Born in 1963. MD. Universitat Autònoma, Barcelona, Spain 1988. Cardiology specialist by the Danish National Board in 2007. PhD degree, 2005, at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark with the thesis “Tumor necrosis factor alpha and vascular insulin resistance”.
Principal supervisor of four completed PhD programs and over 30 master and bachelor research training programs. Co-advisor in five PhDs. Currently supervisor of one PhD in UCPH and co-supervisor in one PhD from the Danish Technical University – DTU -.
Initiated atrial myopathy studies as the LAACS and LAACS-2, RCTs on protection against cerebral infarction by closure of the left atrium appendage during planned heart surgery, regardless of known atrial fibrillation. Cross-sector collaboration studies using telemedicine to reach vulnerable populations.

Grants for atriopathy studies from NovoNordisk Foundation and from the Danish Independent Research Fund (3 mill DKK each).
Received a 13-mio DKK grant from Innovationsfonden in 2017 for REAFEL (Reaching the Frail Elderly for management of atrial fibrillation) and 12 mill DKK in 2022 for CATCH (on heart failure). A 5-mill DKK grant from Danida Research Center the BRAHIT study (Brazilian Heart Insufficiency management with Telemedicine) fosters an adaptation of the cross-sector collaboration model used in the REAFEL project, bench-marked as “cardio-share”.
Publications:
Over 80 peer-reviewed original articles (80% in Q1-journals). Responsible guest editor for the publication of a Special Issue in Hormone and Metabolic Research, and published an invited Editorial in JACC in 2017. Excellent quality reviewer nomination by Annals of Internal Medicine (2011)
