Irene Jubany holds a degree in Chemical Engineering (2002) and a Ph.D. in Science (2007), both from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Her doctoral research focused on the operation, modelling, and automatic control of complete and partial nitrification in highly concentrated ammonium wastewater.
In 2007, she worked in the technical department of an industrial waste management company in Barcelona. The following year, she joined Fundació CTM Centre Tecnològic—now Eurecat, a leading technological centre in Catalonia. From 2008 to 2010, she served as a researcher specializing in water and soil treatment. In 2011, she was appointed head of the Soil and Groundwater Research Department, where her work encompassed soil management, soil and groundwater characterization and remediation, biological remediation processes for water and soil, and risk assessment of chemical contaminants.
In 2020, she became Scientific Coordinator of the Sustainability Area, and in 2025 assumed the role of Scientific Director of Sustainability. The Sustainability Area, comprising more than 90 members, addresses environmental quality, climate resilience, and circular economy topics. Her work centres on promoting scientific and technological innovation while ensuring high-quality scientific output.
She has extensive experience managing national and international research projects and is co-author of more than 30 publications in international scientific journals. She has also supervised three doctoral theses, one of which is ongoing.
