University of Waterloo

Dr. Maricor Arlos (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. With an interdisciplinary training in environmental engineering and aquatic ecotoxicology (biology), her research activities evolved into two distinct yet complementary research themes. The first focuses on understanding the fate/transport of micropollutants in natural and engineered water systems. The second theme centers on the development of advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies to mitigate the release of micropollutants into receiving waters. With her work on quantifying exposure andlinking pesticide fate/transport to effects, she was appointed as a member of the National Scientific Advisory Committee on Pest Control Products (2022− 2025). This committee provides the PestManagement Regulatory Agency (PMRA, under Health Canada mandate) with independent scientific expertise to support evidence-based decision-making on pesticides. Water transectsmultiple disciplines, and her interdisciplinary expertise enables her to seamlessly integrate aquatic ecotoxicology, water quality management, and water/wastewater treatment, while synthesizing insights that advance the fields of environmental science and engineering.
