Michael W Schwartz

After graduating from Rush Medical College in 1983 and completing his medical residency at the University of Washington (UW) in 1986, Dr. Schwartz remained at UW for his specialty training in endocrinology and metabolism. In 1993, he joined the full-time faculty at UW, rising to the rank of full professor in 2001. In 2007, he became founding director of the UW Diabetes and Obesity Center of Excellence and guided its subsequent transformation into the UWMedicine Diabetes Institute, which he co-directed until May of 2024. Over his career, he has mixed the care of patients with research in diabetes and obesity that to date has produced 285 peer-reviewed publications. In 2010, Dr. Schwartz was awarded the Robert H. Williams Endowed Chair in Medicine at UW in recognition of his research achievements and he is the recipient of many other research awards as well.
