Mpiko Ntsekhe is the Hellen and Morris Mauerberger Professor and Chair of Cardiology at the University of Cape Town, is Co-Director of South Africa MRC’s Extra Mural Unit on the Intersection of Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases, and Vice President- South of the Pan-African Society of Cardiology. He is deputy Chair of the recently formed Cognitum Consortium (https://www.cognitumconsortium.org/ ), and until April of 2025 was the Director of Clinical Research Center at UCT.
After graduating from Brown University (BA), and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (MD), he completed both his clinical (FCP, SA) & (Cert Cardio SA) and research training (MPhil & PhD) at the University of Cape Town. UCT’s Department of Cardiology is a center or excellence in the provision of tertiary and quaternary cardiology care, sub-specialty cardiology clinical and research training, and the conduct of impactful cardiovascular research that is locally relevant, and globally competitive. Ntsekhe has a well-established publication record in his areas of research interest which include : 1] the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa; 2] the intersection of infectious and cardiovascular disease and its impact on disease burden and adverse health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa; and 3] translational research with focus on randomized controlled trials aimed at improving treatment options and outcomes for patients and communities with a high burden of both cardiovascular diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. His contributions to cardiovascular medicine have been acknowledged through prestigious international and local fellowships, awards and honours by the SA MRC, National Research Foundation, American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology and UCT’s College of Fellows.
