Robert Gulden has over 30 years research experience with the last 18 as an academic combining research, teaching and outreach.  He has held several leadership roles including Associate Department Head and Acting Department Head at the University of Manitoba.  He has also held several positions on the board of the Canadian Weed Science Society including chairing the local arrangements committee for the annual meeting and participates in several local organizations that serve the agricultural community.

His lab specializes in weed and crop ecology and management to seek crop protection practises that minimize the effect of weeds on crops while reducing the reliance on herbicides.  The research program is field and lab based.  In the field, his lab studies these crop-weed interactions above and below ground including remote sensing of plant interactions as well as the study of roots and the ecology of weed seedbanks. His lab has developed a number of decision-making tools such as weed management thresholds or using integrated weed management tools to shorten the critical period of weed control.  He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and has supervised over 20 MSc and PhD graduate students and 5 post-doctoral fellows.

His key awards include a NACTA award, several teacher of the year awards, the CWSS Excellence in Weed Science award and a University of Manitoba Outreach award.
