Sarah Hale

Senior Researcher
German Water Centre (TZW)

Sarah Hale completed her PhD in 2009 at Newcastle University, UK working with the remediation of PAH contaminated sediment. She moved to Oslo to carry out a postdoctoral position at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute related to the use of biochar as a sorbent and soil amendment. During her time in Oslo she developed research expertise focused on the environmental fate and transport of persistent, mobile and toxic and very persistent and very mobile (PMT/vPvM) substances.

Dr Hale works at the science-policy interface, and in collaboration with Norwegian colleagues at those at the German Environment Agency, she has been successful in catalysing a policy change to protect drinking water sources from PMT/vPvM substances. Over recent years, her research has focused in on per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), where she has worked with remediation strategies, monitoring campaigns and product stewardship.

Dr Hale now works as a Senior Researcher for the German Water Centre where she is managing a European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation called ZeroPM: Zero pollution of Persistent, Mobile substances. ZeroPM aims to protect the environment and human health from persistent and mobile substances by interlinking prevention, priotization and removal strategies.
