From 17 October 2025, UK veterans can now apply for and download a digital version of the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card directly to their smartphones
Available through the GOV.UK One Login app, the Digital veteran card makes it easier for veterans to prove their status and access government services and discounts quickly and securely.
The Digital veteran card contains the same information as the physical version, including name, photo, last service branch, and date of birth. It also uses high-security features, similar to online banking apps, to protect personal information.
Quick, secure and convenient
Once the application is approved, veterans can add the Digital veteran card to their phone in minutes, which is faster than waiting for a physical card in the mail. Just like a digital railcard or bank card, the Veteran Card becomes easily accessible at the tap of a screen, removing the need to carry a physical card everywhere.
The GOV.UK One Login app supports Face ID, Touch ID, and passcodes, ensuring both ease of use and strong security. Veterans simply open the app and show their digital card when needed.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall, said:
“Our veterans have given everything by serving for their country and it is only right that we give them all the support they need.”
“The digital Veterans Card will help remove barriers, reduce red-tape and make it easier for people to access the public services they need.”
Easier access to services and discounts
With this Digital veteran card, nearly 2 million UK veterans can now more easily access a wide range of support and benefits, including:
- Registering with a GP and sharing their service background to access health programmes like Op RESTORE(physical health) and Op COURAGE (mental health).
- Applying for supported housing through Op FORTITUDE, the government’s service for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
- Finding employment through Op ASCEND, a programme connecting veterans with career advice and veteran-friendly employers.
- Getting discounts from participating businesses, museums, and shops.
Optional and flexible
The Digital Veteran Card is entirely optional. Veterans can still apply for and use the traditional physical card if they prefer. For those who choose the digital version, it currently works for in-person use only. Online functionality will be introduced over the coming months as systems are updated.
For now, the Digital veteran card cannot be used for domestic air travel or to apply for a Veteran Railcard, but these features are expected to be added in the future.
This new card is the first official digital document available through the GOV.UK One Login app, which will soon evolve into a wider GOV.UK Wallet. Over time, more credentials, such as a digital driving licence, will be added to the app, giving users a secure and convenient way to access public services all in one place.
