The European Commission’s flagship research and innovation event returns this autumn, bringing together policymakers, researchers, business leaders and the public to set the course for Europe’s future in science and technology
The sixth edition of the European Research & Innovation Days will take place on 16–17 September 2025 at The Square in Brussels, with opportunities for both in-person and online participation.
European innovation
This year’s European Research & Innovation Days takes place at a crucial time for the European Union, as discussions on the next long-term budget and key policy frameworks are gaining momentum. This act will serve as a platform to align strategies that strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and industrial leadership in a rapidly changing global landscape.
The programme features over 20 sessions designed to connect high-level policymaking with real-world impact. Themes range from startup growth and scaling opportunities to advancements in artificial intelligence, life sciences and pan-European collaboration.
Key themes and strategies
Several key strategies will be highlighted in the European Research & Innovation Days. The Startup and Scaleup Strategy will outline how to support Europe’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, enabling promising companies to grow into global players. The European Life Sciences Strategy will focus on strengthening Europe’s role in biotechnology, medical innovation and healthcare resilience.
The AI in Science Strategy is expected to draw significant attention, highlighting how artificial intelligence can accelerate discovery and innovation across research disciplines. Meanwhile, the European Innovation and Research Area Acts will spotlight frameworks for deepening collaboration across EU member states and ensuring Europe remains a leading hub for knowledge and technology.
Voices across Europe
The European Research & Innovation Days will bring together senior leaders from EU institutions, academia, and industry. Participants can expect to hear from some of the most influential figures shaping the future of European research and innovation, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will deliver a keynote address. Opening remarks will be delivered by Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, setting the stage for two days of debate and exchange.
Other prominent figures, such as Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and renowned author and science communicator Lucy Hawking, will add diverse perspectives to the conversations. The breadth of voices reflects the event’s mission to bridge policy, science and society.
The European Research & Innovation Days are designed not just for listening, but also for active participation. Alongside high-level panels, the agenda includes hands-on breakout sessions and targeted networking opportunities. This mix of formats ensures that participants can both absorb strategic insights and contribute their own experiences to the dialogue.
By creating direct links between policy discussions and on-the-ground challenges, the event aims to shape decisions that deliver tangible benefits for European citizens and businesses alike.
While Brussels will serve as the central stage, the event is also accessible online, allowing participants from across Europe and beyond to join the debate. Registration is open to anyone interested in research, innovation and Europe’s future competitiveness, making the event a truly inclusive platform.
