The UK government has launched a new international campaign aimed at positioning the country as a leading research and innovation partner through Horizon Europe

The campaign targets key partners, including Spain and Germany, and aims to highlight the benefits of collaborating with UK researchers, universities, and businesses.

Improving ties through Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe, which runs until 2027 with a budget of over £82 billion (€95.5 billion), supports international research collaboration to address global challenges.

By participating in the programme, UK organisations gain access to significant funding and can work with world-class partners across Europe and beyond.

The new campaign is part of the UK’s bigger plan to improve international partnerships and foster economic growth through innovation, as outlined in its Plan for Change. Spain and Germany are seen as key collaborators in this effort, given their strong research and development capabilities.

Previous success: The ESCALATE Project

One of the key examples of successful collaboration supported by Horizon funding is the ESCALATE project. Funded through Horizon Europe’s predecessor programme, ESCALATE brought together UK, Spanish, and German partners to develop affordable and practical electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The £19 million (€22 million) project saw Yorkshire-based Electra Commercial Vehicles work closely with Spain’s Primafrio Corporation and Germany’s RWTH Aachen University. Their combined efforts led to innovations in modular electric vehicle design and battery systems, helping open new commercial opportunities and push the boundaries of electric transportation.

UK leading research excellence

The campaign builds on the UK’s strong track record in scientific achievement. In June, the UK secured 56 European Research Council Advanced Grants worth approximately £120 million (€140 million), more than any other country. These grants support high-impact projects across various sectors, including healthcare and artificial intelligence.

With its world-renowned universities, cutting-edge research institutions, and a high number of Nobel prize winners, the UK is well-positioned to offer value to research consortia across Europe. By encouraging more cross-border collaboration, the UK aims to remain at the forefront of global innovation.

Practical support for research and innovators

To help UK and European researchers and businesses connect more effectively, the campaign will include a series of networking events throughout 2025. These events are designed to facilitate partnerships and improve access to Horizon Europe opportunities.

In addition, grants are being made available to support UK businesses in covering the costs of attending European R&D events. This is part of a wider effort to boost UK participation in Horizon Europe and help more organisations benefit from the programme.

Support is also available through the Horizon Hub, hosted by Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). These platforms provide practical guidance on funding calls, the application process, and connecting with Horizon Experts and National Contact Points.

The campaign launch works with the visit of Spain’s Prime Minister to London symbolic moment that highlights the importance of international cooperation. By spotlighting real-world success stories and offering practical tools for collaboration, the UK hopes to deepen its scientific ties with European partners and secure long-term growth in high-potential sectors.
