Europe has continued to take steps towards strengthening its ability to adapt to the growing impact of climate change through its EU Mission on adaptation to climate change
The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change has officially launched 18 new projects designed to help regions and communities across the continent become more resilient to rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental pressures.
With a total investment of EUR 115 million from the European Commission, these initiatives will develop and test innovative solutions for climate adaptation in more than 85 regions across 28 countries. Together, they represent a significant milestone in accelerating coordinated adaptation efforts and embedding climate resilience into every level of governance.
REGILIENCE+
One of the newly launched initiatives, REGILIENCE+ stands out as a flagship project focused on making climate adaptation knowledge more practical and accessible. The project will identify 150 proven adaptation solutions from across Europe, gathering insights from existing EU mission projects.
These solutions will be turned into user-friendly materials, training sessions, and targeted activities that regional and local authorities can easily apply. By simplifying access to tested approaches, REGILIENCE+ aims to empower public administrations, communities, and other stakeholders to design and implement effective adaptation strategies suited to their unique environmental and socio-economic contexts.
REGILIENCE+ will contribute directly to the EU Mission Portal, the central knowledge hub for adaptation efforts. This will ensure that valuable lessons, tools, and data are shared widely, enabling regions to learn from one another and scale up what works best.
National adaptation hubs
Another key initiative, the National Adaptation Hubs project, brings the EU Mission’s work to the national level. Each Member State will host its own Adaptation Hub.
These Hubs will help coordinate and align adaptation actions across all levels of governance, creating collaboration and joint learning between national, regional, and local institutions. They will also support the implementation of national adaptation policies and the integration of climate resilience into decision-making processes.
A consortium of expert institutions, European city networks, and regional coordinators will support the Hubs. Together, they will form a strong ecosystem for capacity building, ensuring that climate adaptation becomes a mainstream part of governance throughout the EU.
Expanding innovation
Alongside REGILIENCE+ and the Adaptation Hubs, 16 new Horizon Europe projects have been launched under the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. These projects will fill critical knowledge and practice gaps by enhancing Europe’s understanding, monitoring, and implementation of adaptation measures.
The projects will explore a wide range of themes, including how to measure progress in adaptation, the connections between climate change and biodiversity loss, and methods for building local capacity for transformative adaptation.
They will also focus on practical challenges, such as making adaptation projects financially viable, tailoring solutions for rural and small communities, and supporting vulnerable social groups most affected by climate impacts.
By combining scientific research with hands-on testing and collaboration, these initiatives aim to turn cutting-edge ideas into tangible actions that help regions thrive in a changing climate.
Together, the 18 newly launched projects mark a decisive move toward a more coordinated and resilient Europe. By linking knowledge with action, connecting institutions at all levels, and supporting innovation on the ground, the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change continues to lead the way in preparing Europe for the challenges of a warming world.
