The European Commission has launched a new call for applications to form an expert group (EURIAS) dedicated to shaping the future of research and innovation in the European automotive sector

The group, formally known as the Expert Group on European Union Research and Innovation for the Automotive Sector (EURIAS), will play a strategic advisory role in supporting upcoming EU policy initiatives.

With the automotive industry undergoing rapid technological, environmental, and economic changes, the creation of EURIAS demonstrates the Commission’s intent to ensure that future research and innovation policies are closely aligned with industry needs, societal expectations, and long-term competitiveness.

Supporting future automotive policy

EURIAS has been established as an informal Commission expert group to advise the European Commission on research and innovation priorities across the automotive value chain. Its work will focus on providing expert input into the preparation of future policy initiatives and funding instruments for the sector.

Members of EURIAS will contribute their technical knowledge and strategic perspectives to help identify the most relevant research and innovation topics for Europe’s automotive ecosystem. These topics are expected to address competitiveness, sustainability, digitalisation, safety, and mobility challenges facing the sector.

A key task for the group will be to support the development of a forward-looking strategic research and innovation agenda for the European automotive sector, scheduled for completion by June 2026.

Contribution to the next EU framework programme

In addition to shaping short- and medium-term priorities, the expert group will also play an important role in preparing the European Union’s next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. This includes ensuring that the strategic research and innovation agenda developed by EURIAS is properly reflected in the Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2028–2034.

By linking long-term policy planning with concrete research priorities, the group is expected to help strengthen coherence between industrial strategy, research funding, and regulatory developments at the EU level.

Who can apply

EURIAS will consist of approximately 50 members, selected from a wide range of organisations connected to the European automotive sector. Eligible applicants include automotive original equipment manufacturers, suppliers across the automotive value chain, academic institutions, and research and technology organisations actively engaged in automotive research and innovation.

Civil society organisations may also apply, provided their mission is relevant to the automotive sector. This includes, but is not limited to, organisations focused on road safety, road infrastructure, transport operators, and mobility-related issues.

Applications are open to EU-based organisations, reflecting the Commission’s aim to build a balanced, representative group that covers industrial, research, and societal perspectives.

Application process and timeline

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the official application form provided by the European Commission. This is the only accepted mechanism for applying to become a member of the expert group. By applying, organisations confirm their agreement with both the Call for Applications and the Terms of Reference governing the group’s work.

The deadline for applications is 2 February 2026 at 17:00 Central European Time. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.

Full information on eligibility criteria, selection procedures, and required documentation is available in the Call for Applications. Organisations interested in contributing to the future direction of European automotive research and innovation are encouraged to carefully review the documents and submit their applications in due time.
