A new wave of EU-funded initiatives launched under the 2024 EU4Health Work Programme is creating a stronger, more intelligent, and more connected digital healthcare service across the European Union

These EU4Health projects cover artificial intelligence, cross-border data exchange, and improved national digital infrastructures, aiming to enhance patient care, boost system efficiency, and prepare Europe for a more integrated health data landscape.

Advancing safe and effective AI in healthcare

One of the main EU4Health projects underway is COMPASS-AI, designed to address the challenges of safely and reliably using artificial intelligence in healthcare. With a particular focus on cancer care and the needs of remote regions, the project brings together specialists from diverse fields to identify best practices for AI deployment in real clinical environments.

COMPASS-AI will run pilot studies to test how AI tools can support diagnosis, treatment, and care pathways. It will also develop a digital platform to map real-world experiences with AI technologies, helping healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers exchange insights and strengthen digital and AI literacy across Europe.

Strengthening the MyHealth@EU infrastructure

Alongside COMPASS-AI, nine additional projects have begun expanding and reinforcing the eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure (eHDSI), better known as MyHealth@EU.

This EU-wide platform allows citizens to access their medical information securely, download it in a portable digital format, and use cross-border services such as electronic prescriptions and patient summaries when travelling.

Together, these EU4Health projects have the backing of €8.22 million in EU investment, supporting the vision of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) to make health data exchange seamless, secure, and interoperable across all Member States.

Cross-border ePrescription and laboratory services

Several national EU4Health projects focus on improving or expanding cross-border digital health services:

  • DVKA ePrescription B (Germany) is working to ensure foreign visitors can have their electronic prescriptions recognised and safely dispensed in Germany through the MyHealth@EU network.
  • FLaReS (Finland) is creating a Laboratory Result Report Service that will enable the exchange of laboratory data across borders, benefiting citizens travelling abroad as well as visitors seeking care in Finland.
  • LT NCPeH eLAB (Lithuania) is extending its cross-border laboratory results services, improving operational stability and increasing service coverage for laboratories and healthcare providers.
  • MH4EU-ES-LR (Spain) aims to enhance MyHealth@EU services by adding secure cross-border exchange of laboratory results to the country’s already established ePrescription and patient summary systems.
  • MyHealthCY (Cyprus) is strengthening its integration into MyHealth@EU by improving cross-border ePrescription services and preparing for the exchange of laboratory results and medical imaging.

Building a future-ready national contact points

Several countries are laying the groundwork for full participation in MyHealth@EU:

  • The setup BE-NCPeH PS-A (Belgium) will establish the Belgian National Contact Point for eHealth and prepare the national ecosystem for cross-border medical data exchange.
  • RO-MI-LR-DR (Romania, starting 2026) will develop services for medical imaging, laboratory data, and discharge reports.
  • EHDSIDenmark (starting 2026) will implement and test Denmark’s National Contact Point to enable the exchange of patient summaries and ePrescriptions.

With Ukraine moving closer to EU accession, EU HEALS is helping the country align its digital health capabilities with EU standards. Activities include technical assessments, regulatory preparation, and the first pilot exchanges of electronic prescriptions and patient summaries with Estonia.
