The second cohort of EU Bioeconomy Youth Ambassadors has officially launched its two-year journey to tackle sustainability and innovation across Europe

The mission began during a summer camp held in Brussels on 3–4 July 2025, where nearly 15 young leaders gathered to start working on supporting the EU’s green transition.

This group of 20- to 30-year-olds represents a wide range of countries and disciplines, from environmental science and biotechnology to food systems and forestry. Their shared goal is to help bring the EU’s bioeconomy strategy to life and connect it with communities across the continent.

The summer camp provided a hands-on introduction to the EU bioeconomy and its role in creating a more sustainable, circular economy.

Through interactive sessions focused on storytelling, digital communication, and combating misinformation, the Ambassadors explored how to make complex policy issues more accessible and engaging for the wider public.

The two-day event also allowed Ambassadors to begin creating a roadmap that will guide their activities over the next two years. The program emphasised collaboration, encouraging participants to work together across borders and disciplines to amplify the impact of their work.

Connecting policy with people

A central theme throughout the camp was the importance of linking EU policy to the everyday lives of citizens. While Brussels is a key hub for decision-making, the bioeconomy must take root at the local level, in towns, cities, schools, and communities.

The Ambassadors will be key connectors between EU institutions and the public, especially young people. By participating in outreach events, delivering workshops, and developing educational initiatives, they aim to bring EU policies closer to the ground and foster active citizen engagement.

Roles and responsibilities

Over their two-year term, the Ambassadors will support the European Commission’s efforts to promote a sustainable bioeconomy and amplify youth voices. They will take part in events, lead EU-supported projects, and contribute to education and youth programs across Member States.

With expertise in areas like circular economy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental innovation, the Ambassadors are well set to act as role models and multipliers. Their mission includes raising awareness, inspiring young Europeans, and driving real-world change through community engagement.

As the European Commission continues work on a new EU Bioeconomy Strategy, the role of the Youth Ambassadors becomes more critical. They will not only promote the strategy but also help shape its implementation by sharing on-the-ground insights and championing inclusive, youth-led approaches.

Though the Ambassadors arrived in Brussels as individuals, they left with a strong sense of shared purpose and connection. This new network of changemakers is now ready to take their message across Europe, uniting science, policy, and community action in support of a thriving, sustainable bioeconomy.

With two years of action ahead, the stage is set for the Ambassadors to become influential voices in Europe’s journey towards a greener and more resilient future.
