16 million repeat prescriptions: The power of a digital NHS

Over the last 12 months, more than 16 million repeat prescriptions were ordered through the NHS app – proving just how crucial digital access to health care is in 2022 NHS Digital

The figures, released by NHS digital, show just how vital access to digital paths to healthcare is for people across the UK.

NHSx and the importance of digital healthcare

The statistics show that more than three million GP appointments were booked through the app between June 2021 and May 2022. Along with this over the 12 months, GP records were viewed over 90 million times.

Last month was particularly busy, with 1.8 million repeat prescriptions ordered through the app, 1.3 million GP appointments booked and 4.8 million GP records viewed

2021 alone also saw the app record 22 million new registrations, taking its total to over 28 million sign-ups. The government wants 75% of the adult population in England to have registered with the app by March 2024.

Simon Bolton, the interim chief executive at NHS Digital said, “the NHS App is a great example of how technology is being used to help patients take control of their healthcare in a convenient, secure and timely way.”

“Millions of adults are now using the app every month to order repeat prescriptions, book GP appointments and view their GP records. It’s great to see use of the app continuing to increase, helping millions of people access healthcare services across England directly from their phone.”
