The UK government has announced six groundbreaking projects to strengthen its space infrastructure and promote collaboration within the sector

These projects were unveiled at the Space-Comm Expo and are at the forefront of the government’s Space Industrial Plan publication, showing a strong commitment to advancing the nation’s space capabilities.

The UK’s space industry: Supporting space infrastructure

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), one of the nation’s leading satellite manufacturers, has secured a project under the UK Space Agency’s Space Cluster Infrastructure Fund (SCIF).

Backed by a ÂŁ250,000 public investment, matched by SSTL, this initiative will establish a Research and Development Imager Cleanroom in Guilford.

The SCIF, which has already allocated ÂŁ47 million for transformative projects nationwide, emphasises the government’s commitment to nurturing the UK’s space ecosystem.

Space projects

From supporting space skills in Newcastle to promoting microgravity research in Cardiff, these investments are laying the groundwork for a collaborative space industry.

Emphasising collaboration as a foundation of growth, the UK Space Agency injects a further ÂŁ500,000 into five groundbreaking projects. These initiatives span different regions and objectives, each designed to boost innovation and drive economic growth.

What are these space projects?

  1. One “Space North” project aims to unite space hubs across Yorkshire, the North West, and North East England. By showcasing regional expertise in strong communications and attracting investment, this initiative aims to position the North as a powerhouse in the space sector.
  2. “Unlocking Space for Agriculture” aims to bridge the gap between Scotland and the East of England, using space capabilities to revolutionise agricultural practices. This initiative promises transformative solutions for the agricultural sector by exploring challenge-based opportunities and sharing knowledge.
  3. In the South West, a partnership between Space West, the Cornwall Space Cluster, and regional authorities aims to elevate the region’s space capabilities on the global stage. The “South West Space Partnership” looks to set the region as a key player in the space industry through strategic collaborations and international investment.
  4. “Power4Space” attempts to strengthen ties between the North West and Midlands Space Clusters, capitalising on commercial opportunities in unknown power systems for deep space applications. This initiative aims to drive innovation in space technologies using regional strengths and supply chains.
  5. Finally, using Earth observation abilities, a collaborative effort between NI Space, Space Wales, and the Space East clusters aims to monitor water bodies for harmful algal blooms and seaweed production. This project holds potential for improving local government services and environmental monitoring.

Boosting space infrastructure and restoring the UK’s position in the space industry

The Chancellor unveiled the full Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) program. With an investment of up to ÂŁ160 million over the next four years, this project is set to create hundreds of highly skilled jobs and stimulate economic growth.

The government has also committed ÂŁ10 million to support orbital launch capabilities at SaxaVord Spaceport.
