The UK government has revealed that UK Horizon Europe applicants will receive support for an additional three months.

Boosting research in the EU, since November 2021, UKRI has granted over £1.05 billion to 2,000 applicants until April 2023. The extension guarantees funding for eligible UK researchers.

Full funding assured for UK Horizon Europe applicants

It was further highlighted by the department that successful Horizon Europe applicants in the UK will receive full funding at their host institution until September 30, 2023, in order for British researchers to continue their innovation endeavours.

Chloe Smith, the Science and Technology Secretary, expressed that the extension provides assurance to top-notch researchers, ensuring they receive ongoing support for their innovative work.

She also acknowledged that this comes as negotiations for association to Horizon Europe continue, while over £1 billion has already been awarded in support.

The provision of funding guarantees that UK-based successful awardees can remain within the country, promoting collaborations and offering support to researchers irrespective of the confirmation of association.

UK Government’s pledge for research in the EU

The UK government has expressed a strong desire for successful talks in respect to Horizon Europe and is actively participating in continuing discussions over the UK’s participation in EU research programmes.

Nevertheless, in light of the long-term effects of the EU’s postponement in the UK’s affiliation, it emphasises the significance of justice for UK researchers, companies, and taxpayers.

The government is still dedicated to talking with people from the corporate, investigation, and technology sectors as these talks develop.

The department has also made a big point of stressing that its main goal is to ensure that the UK’s research and development (R&D) industry receives the best possible assistance.

This funding intends to make it easier to pursue new research continuously and form collaborations with foreign partners.

In order to provide researchers with the certainty they need throughout the ongoing discussions, the guarantee will be extended.
