Britain boosts AI skills with £118 million investment

The UK government has unveiled an ambitious £118 million initiative to enhance the nation’s AI skills, ensuring it remains AI match-fit

This investment comprises various measures aimed at developing AI skills and harnessing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.

12 new AI skill centres to receive funding

The government will allocate £117 million to support 12 new Centres for Doctoral Training in AI.

These centres will focus on AI development and applications and will play a pivotal role in training the next generation of researchers in responsible, trustworthy, and safe AI practices.

These emerging experts will specialise in critical areas, such as healthcare, new treatments, and NHS productivity enhancements.

Facilitating global AI talent relocation to the UK

To attract and retain top AI talent, a £1 million AI Futures Grants scheme will be created. This initiative will assist emerging AI researchers and engineers worldwide in relocating to the UK to work within its world-class universities, businesses, and research institutes.

This move aims to strengthen the UK’s position as a global hub for AI expertise.

International scholarships in science and technology

The government, in collaboration with the British Council and UK universities, will fund 15 GREAT scholarships for international students pursuing Science and Technology courses.

This support will cover subjects related to AI and life sciences, further solidifying the UK’s reputation as a destination for global excellence.

Backing invisible geniuses and early career researchers

A pilot scholarship program called ‘Backing Invisible Geniuses’ (BIG) will identify and nurture high-school talents in International Science Olympiads.

This initiative will promote excellence in mathematics, science, and AI, attracting top STEM talent to the UK’s leading universities and enhancing the nation’s global standing in AI research.

Additionally, a dedicated visa scheme will be introduced to encourage the world’s most promising AI researchers to embark on internships and placements in the UK early in their careers.

Broader AI initiatives

Along with these skill-building efforts, the government will implement various initiatives to maximise AI’s potential.

This includes deploying AI technology across 64 NHS trusts to enhance chest X-ray and CT scan diagnoses, implementing AI tools to assist work coaches in Jobcentres, supporting educational improvements with AI in collaboration with the Oak National Academy, enhancing weather forecasting using AI in partnership with the Met Office, and creating a regulatory sandbox for AI innovation in healthcare.

Moreover, an internationally recognised set of standards for AI use in health will be established to ensure equitable access to AI benefits, irrespective of background.

This significant investment underscores the UK’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in AI development and application, mitigating AI risks, and realising the vast benefits that this transformative technology promises.

The initiative will shape a more AI-savvy and competitive future for the nation, propelling it forward in the global AI race.
