The Governments of Belize and the United Kingdom have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Ocean Country Partnership Programme

The signing ceremony occurred on March 29, 2023, at the British High Commissioner’s Residence.

The Ocean Country Partnership Programme aims to support partner countries, including Belize, by establishing a collaborative framework.

This framework will strengthen marine science expertise, develop science-based policy and management tools, and create educational resources for coastal communities.

Areas of focus for marine science

Funded by the Blue Plant Fund through Official Development Assistance (ODA), the Programme focuses on three key areas.

These areas are marine biodiversity, marine pollution, and sustainable seafood.

The partnership aims to promote the sustainable management of ocean resources by addressing these issues.

Belize becomes first Caribbean country to sign MOU

Belize has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first country in the Caribbean and the second worldwide to sign an MOU with the Government of the United Kingdom for the Ocean Country Partnership Programme.

This collaboration highlights the importance of Belize’s commitment to protecting and conserving its marine environment.

History between Belize and the UK and importance of deal

Belize, a former British colony, shares a historical relationship with the United Kingdom.

The country gained independence in 1981 but has maintained strong ties with its former coloniser. The signing of the Ocean Country Partnership Programme MOU further solidifies this relationship.

The deal holds excellent significance for Belize, allowing the country to leverage the UK’s expertise and resources in marine science and sustainable management.

Belize’s coastal communities heavily rely on the ocean for their livelihoods and the health of their ecosystems. By partnering with the UK, Belize aims to enhance its marine research, policy development, and resource management capabilities.

Belize’s leadership in environmental conservation

Furthermore, being the first Caribbean country to sign this agreement demonstrates Belize’s leadership in environmental conservation efforts.

It sets a positive example for other nations in the region to prioritise protecting their marine resources and collaborate with international partners to achieve sustainable development goals.

The Ocean Country Partnership Programme MOU between Belize and the United Kingdom marks a significant step in strengthening marine conservation and sustainable development efforts.

Through this collaboration, Belize aims to preserve its rich marine biodiversity, address marine pollution, and promote sustainable seafood practices to benefit its coastal communities and the environment.
