The food and agriculture sector: Companies that take responsibility for a future competent workforce

Without companies and employers who engage and take responsibility by opening their doors to curious students, welcoming study visits into their operations, sharing their challenges and their progress, development will come to a standstill

During two days, approx. 30 students at the Vocational College, Folkuniversitetet, in the food and agriculture sector visited entrepreneurs in North-western Scania. The students have a focus on contributing skills to existing companies in order to strengthen operations within a more sustainable, circular and competitive production. What could be more important in these days.

Fortunately, there are forward-looking and responsible business leaders and employers such as Foodhills, Ekobalans, Söderåsen Bioenergi, St1, Vrams Gunnarstorps Gods, Spisa, Magnihill, Nutifood and Solserv.

Foodhills: Peas are out future

Foodhills AB is a dynamic, constantly-evolving enterprise. Our focus today is on growing and selling frozen green peas.

Thanks to our region’s strong farming tradition and knowledge-sharing among local growers in Skåne and Halland counties, in just a short time, Foodhills has succeeded in building a cooperative organization that’s expected to produce 14,000 tonnes of green peas in 2022.

Given the rising interest in legumes as a food of the future, our growth potential is enormous. In fact, Foodhills’ products are already in demand all over the world, with 10,000 tonnes of peas exported in 2021.

EkoBalans: The future is circular and EkoBalans has got the technology

Circular economy is the opposite of the toil and waste society. In a circular economy, we use the resources that already exist in society instead of new materials. For EkoBalans, circular economy means benefiting from residual flows from agriculture, sewage treatment plants and industry. If we had to decide, all residual flows, which contain phosphorus, nitrogen and substances that contribute to an improvement in the properties of the soil, would be called resource flows. Where there are resource flows, EkoBalans wants to work.

Söderåsen’s Bioenergy – St1

Is a Biogas plant located on the outskirts of Bjuv. We extract Biogas from organic waste from food industries, manure and food waste for the most part.

The facility is built to take care of 65,000 tons of organic waste per year.

Vrams Gunnarstorp’s estate

Wrams Gunnarstorps is located on the south side of Söderåsen in northwestern Scania – with the forest at the back and the plain landscape spreading out in front. It was originally built as a hunting lodge intended for recreation with inspiration from France.

Today, extensive sustainable, innovative and competitive agriculture and forestry is carried out.

In collaboration with Ekobalans and Söderåsen’s bioenergy as well as a newly built irrigation dam of 200,000 cubic meters, they produce circular Fertilizer, a high-quality, circular fertilizing product suitable for gardens, green spaces, and all agricultural crops. The market’s first pelletized and digestate-based circular fertilizer. At the same time sustainable irrigation with nutrient-rich water is ensured for the crops. The activities that are carried out today must secure the activities and survival of future generations (Rudolf Tornerhjelm).
