British commandos teamed up with Ukrainian Marines for a six-month training program in the UK, enhancing their capabilities in small-boat amphibious operations and combat skills

Nearly a thousand Ukrainian marines have completed an unprecedented training program in the UK, led by Royal Marines and Army Commandos.

This is another important aspect of UK PM Rishi Sunak’s plan to support Ukraine.

British expertise shared with Ukrainian marines

This intensive six-month initiative, endorsed during President Zelenskyy’s visit to the UK, focuses on small-boat amphibious operations and strategic beach raids using inflatable boats. The program aims to bolster Ukraine’s maritime capabilities and foster its distinct marine force.

Intensive skill development for Ukraine’s military

The rigorous training encompassed around 900 Ukrainian marines from diverse backgrounds. It covered a broad spectrum of combat skills, from employing advanced weaponry like Next Generation Light Anti-Tank Weapons (NLAW) and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to operating mortars, reconnaissance drones, and handling explosive demolition.

The course enriched seasoned soldiers’ expertise and transformed civilian volunteers into capable marines.

Elite instructors shape the future of Ukraine

Instructors from elite units such as 42 Commando, 47 Commando Raiding Group, 24 Commando Engineers, and Royal Artillery Gunners from 29 Commando teamed up to deliver this comprehensive training.

Their efforts have made Ukrainian marines adept in various aspects, from fieldcraft and battlefield first aid to close-quarters combat and unit planning in realistic scenarios. The involvement of the Netherlands Marine Corps further enriched the training experience.

UK and Ukraine’s international cooperation

The training’s impact shows the UK’s dedication to supporting Ukraine’s security and development.

Over 20,000 Ukrainian recruits have benefited from UK training since 2022, spanning essential combat skills and leadership development.

The ongoing commitment for 2023 involves training an additional 20,000 Ukrainian recruits, highlighting the UK’s substantial contributions. This collaborative approach, backed by countries like Australia, Canada, and Sweden, emphasises international solidarity for Ukraine’s Future.

British Commandos and Ukrainian military strengthen international bonds

The remarkable training program between British Commandos and Ukrainian Marines signifies a milestone in bilateral cooperation. Beyond imparting combat prowess, the initiative showcases the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s security. As marines return home, they carry enhanced skills and a strengthened partnership between the two nations.
