During the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak held a significant meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 12, 2023

The discussion focused on several crucial matters, including Ukraine’s progress in its counteroffensive and the UK’s commitment to providing support.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sunak took the opportunity to pay tribute to the unwavering courage and bravery displayed by Ukraine’s Armed Forces on the front lines.

Recognising the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defences, the Prime Minister outlined a new support package that the UK will extend to Ukraine. This commitment signifies the UK’s dedication to standing by Ukraine in its efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its people.

UK’s historical ties to Ukraine

The relationship between the United Kingdom and Ukraine has a long-standing history. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Zelenskyy acknowledged the deep historical ties that bind the two nations.

This recognition further emphasises the significance of the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s security and defence initiatives.

New security arrangements and NATO membership

Prime Minister Sunak welcomed the removal of the Membership Action Plan (MAP) requirement for Ukraine, a step that paves the way for its future full NATO membership.

In addition, both leaders expressed their agreement on the importance of the security arrangements that will be announced by the G7 later in the day.

While crucial in bolstering Ukraine’s endurance against Russian aggression, these arrangements are not intended to substitute Ukraine’s goal of NATO membership. Instead, they will serve as a foundation for further strengthening the country’s security framework and accelerating its path to full NATO integration.

UK and Ukraine build on the new security framework

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Zelenskyy expressed their enthusiasm for building upon the newly established security framework as soon as possible.

They recognised that the international community’s increased support for Ukraine, as exemplified by these security arrangements, marks a significant milestone in reinforcing Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reiterated his commitment to working closely with President Zelenskyy and Ukraine to ensure the country’s secure and stable future.

This meeting between the UK Prime Minister and the Ukrainian President is a testament to the continued support and solidarity among nations in the face of ongoing geopolitical challenges.

As the international community rallies behind Ukraine, the commitment from the United Kingdom reaffirms its dedication to upholding stability, security, and the principles of sovereignty.
