UK and Middle East strengthen ties during foreign secretary’s visit

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is embarking on a 3-day visit to Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan, highlighting the UK and Middle East region’s growing partnership

Recently, the UK government unveiled the Electronic Travel Authorisation visa scheme, benefiting Gulf countries and Jordan citizens by making travel to the UK more affordable and accessible.

This will also strengthen British and Gulf region’s economy and security as the visit underscores the importance of Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan as vital energy, defence, and security partners for the UK.

Trade and investment with regions around the world, such as Gulf countries support the Prime Minister’s economic growth priorities.

Notably, UK trade with Qatar and Kuwait reached an impressive £18.1 billion last year, signifying the thriving financial collaborations between the nations.

UK government supports women, girls, and vulnerable refugees

James Cleverly will announce up to £1.5 million in funding to support initiatives empowering women and girls in Jordan. This financial support will be directed to civil society organisations working towards gender equality and regional welfare enhancement.

Additionally, the Foreign Secretary will meet with representatives from the UNHCR and the World Food Programme, where he will unveil funding amounting to £30 million over three years.

This aid aims to provide cash assistance and support to the most vulnerable refugees, covering their basic food and living needs.

The initiative is projected to reach an estimated 70,000 refugees annually in camps and host communities.

Diplomatic relations between the UK and key Middle East

As James Cleverly expresses delight in returning to the Middle East, he emphasises the UK’s strong and mutually beneficial relationships with Gulf countries and Jordan.
