The team revamped three graphs from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report.

They assessed the redesign’s effect on usability, trustworthiness, and perceived climate change risk.

Surprising findings on trustworthiness in science

While usability remained consistent with the originals, the participants perceived the redesigned graphs as more trustworthy.

Strikingly, one redesign even intensified concern about climate change, challenging the notion that simplicity compromises credibility.

The study revealed that familiar graph formats were most effective while colour-coding and minimal explanatory text significantly enhanced understanding and credibility perception.

However, excessive visual clutter was a potential drawback.
